Lent begins today!

Sometimes on Ash Wednesday people get a cross marked on their forehead with ashes at church. The ashes on our foreheads remind us to always turn to God. Ashes remind us of God’s love in a couple ways. When something is burned ashes are left behind.

Think about when you make a bad choice… how do you feel?

Sometimes when we make bad decisions, we can feel like all that is left behind is ashes but when we ask for forgiveness through prayer to God it helps us to start over and make better decisions.

God created us from dust and to dust we will return.

Suggested Scripture Reading: Genesis 2:7, Genesis 3:19, Daniel 9:3

Activity: Lent Place

Supplies – purple napkin, paper plate, 2 hearts, pipe cleaners, rocks, sand

  • Find a good spot in your house to create your “Lent Space.”
  • Unfold your napkin and place the paper plate on top.
  • Pour the sand onto the paper plate.
  • Take your pipe-cleaners and form a cross.
  • Place the 2 hearts and the cross on the sand.

The hearts and cross remind us of God’s love and Jesus’s sacrifice for us. There are 6 Sundays in Lent. Every Sunday you will place a rock in the sand to create your own desert.

Your Lent place is the reminder of Jesus’s journey to the cross and to Easter Sunday when He will rise from the grave. It is your reminder to follow Jesus on this journey and always!

Family Prayer:

Thank you God, for sending your Son Jesus to us. We ask for your forgiveness and ask you to be with us during Lent while we think about how we can do better. Amen.
