Week One: Hope

Lent has 3 pillars or 3 main things that people usually do and they are: praying, fasting, and almsgiving (giving of gifts). We will use all 3 of these things every week during Lent. Each week you will find devotionals, activities, and prayers to guide you through the lent season. You may pick and choose to do all or only some of the activities that fit with your family. Have fun as we journey through this season with Jesus!

Suggested Scripture reading: Mark 1:1-15

Lesson/Devotional:

Make way! Someone special is coming! In the book of Mark in the bible we read about John the Baptist telling the people that Jesus is coming. John was God’s messenger and gave the people hope that their savior would soon arrive to fulfill God’s promise to them. John also got to baptize Jesus and that was a pretty special moment because Heaven opened up and God said “You are my Beloved Son”. This showed the people that Jesus was God’s son and that Jesus followed Him and could speak for Him. John always pointed the people toward Jesus, and you can do that too! Have you ever had company over? Maybe you had a friend over or cousin to play or to eat dinner together? Think about what you did to prepare for that person to come over. If you found out Jesus was coming what would you do to prepare? This week think about how you can spread the hope of Jesus to your friends and family.

Pray:

Thank you God, for sending your Son Jesus to us! Help us be his messengers and spread the news of hope. Easter is coming and Jesus is our hope. Amen.

Suggested Family Activities

Below you will find a list of activities to complete throughout the week. Pick and choose which activities you’d like to do or try them all! If you’d like to print out the list click on the pdf to download and you can cut them out to make a paper chain as you complete each activity!

Feel free to share any pictures of your family completing these activities on our CYF facebook page

  • Surprise someone by doing a task or chore that they usually do
  • Draw a picture or write a fun news article about Jesus coming to save us! (Pretend you are John the Baptist spreading the good news)
  • Give up electronics for a whole day
  • Pray for those who are sick
  • Try to memorize Romans 5:5 “And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”
  • Start a change collection box. Collect lose change throughout Lent and choose a place to donate your change to at the end of Lent.

Don’t forget to add a rock to your Lent Place and
pray this week for Hope and to spread the news of Jesus
