Story Time:

Joseph and His Brothers, Genesis 37:12-26

Note to parents: For more background information you can also see Genesis 37:1-11

This is the story of Joseph who was one of Jacob’s, also known as Israel, sons. Jacob had 12 sons and Joseph was his favorite. Jacob gave Joseph a colorful robe because he loved him so much and this made his brothers jealous. Jealous means that his brothers were upset because they felt like their dad loved their brother more than them. His brothers came up with a plan to sell Joseph and when they did, they lied to their dad about it. Now this isn’t the end of the story, but this is where we will stop this week. God has a great plan for Joseph!

Lesson:

God makes us all different and special in our own way. God wants us to be ourselves! He also wants us to be kind to one another, even when we disagree.

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever had a fight with someone?
  • How did you solve it?
  • What makes you special?

Activity Idea:

  1. Items needed: paper, scissors, markers or crayons, hole punch, string/yarn
Have each member of your family trace their hand on a piece of paper and cut it out. Take a marker or crayon and write “I am special because...” and then write why you are special! When everyone is finished punch a hole on the thumb and pinky of each hand and use string to tie them together into a chain. Remember that God makes every family special and unique!

  2. Make a list of ways you can get along with your sister, brother, family members and/or friends! Try out a few of those things on your list this week.

Pray together:

Thank God for this bible story. Pray that you remember Him when you are feeling jealous or upset and remember His kindness and that He loves you!
